Sci-fi thriller ‘12 Monkeys’ takes the viewer to the dystopian world of the future 2035, when about 1% of the entire population remained alive on Earth. In the distant 90s, a terrible virus was invented, which destroyed more than five billion people, and survivors are forced to dwell underground. James Cole, a criminal, is forcibly sent to the past by a time machine so that he can prevent the spread of an incurable virus. However, an error occurs and Cole falls not in 1996, but in 1990. Cole's strange behavior forces the authorities to take him for a mentally unhealthy person and put him in a psychiatric clinic.
There he meets a crazy son of a virologist scientist — Jeffrey Goines, but finds out that he'll not release the virus, but his father’s assistant. All Cole’s attempts to warn humanity about imminent mortal danger are perceived as crazy nonsense. But he still travels in time and tries to prevent a catastrophe. A psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly comes to his aid, who for long conversations with the patient realized that he was not insane, but really came from the future.
